Connection

The Connection Series delves into the invisible bonds that tie us to one another and to the world around us. It reflects on the fragility, transformation, and internal struggle within ourselves, exploring how these connections shape our identities and our collective experience. Each piece encourages introspection, inviting viewers to consider the delicate balance of connections that both challenge and define us.

Touch - The Earth Hands

Touch explores the way our interactions and experiences leave lasting marks on us. Starting with a plaster cast of a hand, a mold is created, into which fresh clay is pressed. As the clay takes shape, it picks up the traces and textures of the previous pieces, mirroring how we are shaped by those we’ve encountered. Once dried, the clay is fired, preserving these subtle imprints. The result is a series of ceramic hands that speak to the fragility of identity, the passage of time, and the interconnectedness of all human experiences.

… but with a whimper

… but with a whimper is a print series that delves into themes of confinement, fragility, and introspection through the depiction of figures trapped in bottles. By using texture, color, and layering, the work explores the delicate nature of existence and the quiet, often unnoticed, endings that shape our lives. The figures within the bottles symbolize isolation, evoking a sense of fragility and inviting contemplation on the unseen aspects of the human experience.

Disconnected: A Permanent Impermanence

A Permanent Impermanence explores the paradox of security and transience, highlighting the internal tension and conflict between what endures and what inevitably fades. Through fragile, kneeling figures trapped in glass, the piece reflects on the duality of protection and entrapment, evoking themes of isolation, stagnation, and reverence. The work invites viewers to reflect on how our relationships - with ourselves, with others, with “God” - evolve, often shaped by moments of turmoil and struggle, but also by periods of isolation and quiet, contemplative introspection. This juxtaposition encourages a deeper understanding of how we navigate the delicate balance between connection and disconnection, growth and decay.

We Are Millions

We Are Millions explores collective strength and isolation - capturing unity amidst the loneliness of individualism. Hundreds of forlorn figures, trapped in bottles, hang disconnected - not just from each other, but from their environment - symbolising deeper spiritual and emotional detachment. The piece delves into the concept of shalom - the idea of peace within oneself, with others, with God, and with the environment. The trapped figures reflect the struggle to find harmony in a fractured world, where separation - whether physical, emotional, or spiritual - can feel overwhelming.

Retrospectively: The work also reflects on the introspection and isolation experienced during times of separation, particularly the foreboding sense of loneliness and disconnection prevalent during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this isolation, the collective remains a powerful force - one capable of confronting and resisting those who seek to divide and destroy.

Growth

Growth is a free-built ceramic sculpture that captures the transformative process of change. The figure morphs into a tree, with branches erupting from their shoulders and roots emerging from their waist. This piece delves into themes of growth, change, and the inevitable cycles of life. The figure’s transition from human to tree symbolises the resilience and adaptation inherent in nature, where transformation is both painful and beautiful. The work invites reflection on how growth often emerges from struggle and how our identities are continually reshaped.

Originally displayed in a gallery beneath a forest of bottles, "Growth" was juxtaposed with the "We Are Millions" pieces, creating a striking contrast between the organic transformation of the sculpture and the overwhelming isolation represented by the bottles. Later, the piece was freed and placed outdoors, nestled among brambles, where nature would slowly intertwined with it, symbolising the figure’s return to and integration with the earth. This transition from gallery to nature emphasised the connection between human growth and the natural world, highlighting how, like nature, transformation is inevitable.
